Heavy Rains Flood Bengaluru; MLA Uses JCB To Reach Affected Area
Following heavy rains in Karnataka's Bengaluru on Saturday, several areas experienced severe waterlogging, with Sai Layout in Horamavu among the worst affected. Water levels rose up to the chest in some places, leaving residents stranded and homes flooded. The city braced for more spells of rain in the coming days, with widespread waterlogging, inundated homes, and severe traffic congestion reported.
In response to the situation, local MLA AC Srinivas visited the locality. In a dramatic move, he arrived on a JCB to navigate the inundated streets and assess the extent of the damage. Accompanied by officials, Srinivas spoke to residents and assured them that steps would be taken to prevent future flooding.
Videos from the area showed waterlogged streets with residents wading through deep water. The recent rains had overwhelmed the drainage systems, causing water to accumulate rapidly, especially in low-lying zones.
Residents expressed frustration over repeated instances of flooding, blaming poor infrastructure and clogged stormwater drains. They said they had raised complaints with civic authorities multiple times, but the problem remained unaddressed.
Karnataka Home Minister On Bengaluru Waterlogging
Home Minister G Parameshwara acknowledged the ongoing crisis and noted that the city has been experiencing intense rainfall for the last three days. “During pre-monsoon, we usually see flooding and inundation. The BBMP has been working to clear waterlogged areas and remove uprooted trees and branches from roads. Authorities are on the job,” he stated.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and several other districts, warning of continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds through the week. According to an IMD bulletin, Bengaluru recorded 103 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Social media platforms were flooded with videos showing submerged roads across various neighbourhoods, highlighting how the city’s infrastructure collapses under heavy rainfall.
As rain continues to lash the city, authorities are on alert, and emergency response teams have been deployed to tackle any further disruptions. Cleanup and drainage efforts are underway in the affected neighbourhoods.
