Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar Proposes Grand National Memorial For Veer Savarkar At Andaman’s Cellular Jail

With a view to  honour the legacy of  Veer  Savarkar, Maharashtra’s minister for cultural affairs and IT , Adv. Ashish Shelar has proposed the establishment of a grand national memorial at the historic Cellular Jail in Andaman where the famed freedom fighter was incarcerated by the British.

The proposal was discussed at a recent meeting  with Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, chief secretary, Andaman & Nicobar Administration. Prior to this,  Shelar had also submitted a detailed letter of request to Union home minister Amit Shah seeking the Centre's support for the project.

“The Cellular Jail, once a symbol of sacrifice must now become a symbol of national remembrance. This memorial will not only honour the unparalleled courage of Veer Savarkar and fellow revolutionaries, but also ignite a lasting spirit of patriotism in generations to come," Shelar observed.

The proposed memorial envisions a grand statue, sculptural panels, a digital museum to highlight the heroic efforts of Swatantryaveer Savarkar and other revolutionaries.
