Taking the Club World Cup seriously, Real Madrid have come to a verbal agreement with Benfica's Spanish left-back Alvaro Carreras, a report said. After Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen, former Manchester United star Carreras is set to be the third player with Premier League history to join the Spanish giants ahead of Xabi Alonso's arrival, it added.

22-year-old Alvaro Carreras, an attacking full-back known for his passing range and clinical interceptions, joined Portugal's Benfica from Manchester United in July 2024. Carreras, who made 32 appearances this season, has agreed to a five-year with Real Madrid, OneFootball said in a report. He will be earning a sum of about €9 million per year until 2028, the report added.
Benfica, who lost the league title to Sporting Lisbon, reportedly want Real Madrid to pay Carreras’ €50 million release clause. However, the Los Blancos are looking for a way around to fetch him for a lower price. Manchester United had attached a €17 million buy-back clause while selling the Spaniard to the Eagles. The English and Spanish teams coming to an understanding could see the Red Devils activating it to get their former player for a lower rate, only to sell him again to Real. In this manner, Carreras could become a Madridista for about €35 million, reports pointed out. However, Benfica will only consider the transfer talks after Sunday's Taça de Portugal Cup final against Sporting.

Earlier, there were reports that left-back Ferland Mendy was one of the players Alonso set to have a word with immediately after taking charge. It is said that the Frenchman would be asked by the new manager to expect lesser playtime as Xabi wants a more attacking full-back with better ball-carrying and forward-passing skills for his 4-2-2-2 formation. Carreras fits the bill well and the 6 feet 1 inch-tall star is superior to Mendy in aerial combats and agility as well.
