Illegal tree felling sparks outrage in Salgran village
A serious case of illegal tree felling has come to light in Salgran village, situated in the Udaipur subdivision of Lahaul. The incident, which took place in broad daylight, has sparked widespread anger and concern among the local community, highlighting critical issues related to forest conservation and government oversight.
Villagers were alarmed by the sound of a power chainsaw cutting through trees in the nearby reserve forest area. Acting quickly, they rushed to the site and found fresh green trees being illegally chopped down. Their timely intervention stopped further destruction, but they managed to recover around 60 wooden slippers—concrete proof of the illicit activity.
When confronted, the man responsible shockingly revealed that he was carrying out the orders of a prominent Salgran resident, who also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Forest Corporation. This disclosure has shaken the community, raising fears of corruption and exploitation of forest resources by influential figures.
To support their claims, villagers recorded the incident on video. The footage is now circulating widely on social media, fueling public outrage and demands for justice. The blatant violation of environmental laws has deeply angered the locals, who are calling for urgent government action.
Former MLA Ravi Thakur was immediately informed about the incident. He condemned the failure of the government and forest department to prevent such a large-scale illegal felling right under their watch. Thakur expressed disbelief that such a serious breach of law could occur without detection. He warned that if strict legal measures are not taken against the culprits, he will rally public support and lead protests demanding accountability.
This incident underscores the urgent need for stronger enforcement of forest protection laws and increased vigilance to prevent illegal logging. As the villagers demand justice, the spotlight now turns to the authorities to act decisively.
