Mumbai Coastal Road To Open 24x7 For Motorists Soon? Here's What We Know

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is targeting June 15 to complete the much-awaited promenade along the Mumbai Coastal Road. Reports quoting officials have stated that the road will only be opened round the clock once the promenade work is finished. Presently, the road remains operational between 7 am and midnight due to ongoing construction activities, especially the transportation of materials and equipment.

The 7.5-km-long promenade, stretching between Priyadarshini Park (PDP) and the Worli-end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is nearing completion, reported the Times of India. With a width of 20 meters, it is set to become a major attraction for walkers, joggers and cyclists. Dedicated cycling tracks and underpasses will offer seamless access from various points. This continuous seafront path is expected to become Mumbai’s next big public space after Marine Drive.

The 10.58-km Mumbai Coastal Road, which links Marine Drive’s Princess Street Flyover to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is now fully operational with both carriageways open to vehicular traffic. However, the beautification and development of the surrounding open spaces are still underway. The promenade is being built over an 11-hectare stretch, with Tata Sons overseeing the beautification of the 5-hectare median.

Reliance Industries Recommended To Develop 70 Hectares Of Open Spaces

Meanwhile, Reliance Industries is poised to take charge of developing and maintaining 70 hectares of open spaces along the southern stretch of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP). This decision follows an evaluation of Expressions of Interest (EOI) from five firms, Jindal, Raymond, Vedanta, Torres and Reliance. According to civic officials, Reliance fulfilled all selection criteria and has committed to the project purely under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, without seeking any commercial returns.

The proposal now awaits administrative approval. Once cleared, Reliance will submit a detailed design and development plan. Further progress hinges on approval from the municipal commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, who is currently on leave until next week.

Yoga Zones, Open Gyms Among Key Ameneties

The BMC’s plan for the open space includes a host of public-friendly amenities: Miyawaki forests, musical fountains, butterfly gardens, yoga zones, senior citizen parks, children’s play areas, open-air gyms, jogging and cycling tracks and amphitheatres. The estimated investment for this initiative is at least Rs 400 crore under CSR.
