Yellow Alert Issued In North-East, South, Central, West, & East India; IMD Predicts Moderate To Heavy Rainfalls
New Delhi: India is preparing for a week of severe weather beginning May 19, as widespread rains, thunderstorms, and high winds are predicted in several areas. The northeast, south, central, west, and east are expected to face heavy rainfall, which could lead to disruptions. As the majority of the nation gets ready for rain, western Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir will still experience heatwave conditions.
Guwahati, the capital of Assam, is experiencing significant disturbances caused by heavy downpours, leading to widespread waterlogging and flooding on urban roads. Reports and images show cars moving through inundated roads in places like Rukmini Gaon and Downtown, while people walk through knee-high water.
As reported by The Assam Tribune, the city has experienced 112.5 mm of rainfall since Monday night, surpassing 100 mm as heavy rains continue. Areas historically vulnerable to flooding, such as Chandmari, Rukminigaon, and Nabin Nagar, are heavily impacted.
Meteorological data indicate considerable rainfall amounts, with 115 mm recorded at AAU-HRS and 110 mm at Mirza Circle Office. Officials are on high alert; emergency response units are actively overseeing the situation.
The Chief Minister's Office has cautioned about persistent heavy rainfall in the upcoming days, which could lead to additional waterlogging and landslides. The India Meteorological Department predicts scattered heavy rain in Assam from May 20 to 22, suggesting persistent unfavourable weather conditions.
On Tuesday, the meteorological department forecasted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds (40-50 km/h) in isolated areas of Assam, in addition to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and winds (30-40 km/h) expected on May 21.
In Northeast India, the IMD predicts extensive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and winds (30-50 kmph) over the coming week, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in Arunachal Pradesh on May 20 and in Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura on that same date.
Central India is expected to experience no major variation in maximum temperatures over the next two days, with a decline of 2-3°C expected afterward. The country is preparing for a week of severe weather, marked by high winds and heavy rainfall. A severe warning has been released for heavy rainfall in multiple areas, particularly in the northeast, south, central, west, and east of India. Localized flooding may occur from May 18 to 24, especially along the western coast.
