AAP to end dharna at Nangal dam with rally on Wednesday

The protest by AAP workers at the Nangal dam against the BBMB’s decision to release extra water from the Punjab share to Haryana continued today. Sources said that the party has decided to conclude the dharna tomorrow after organising a political rally in Nangal. The dharna started on May 1, when the Punjab CM first visited Nangal dam and stopped the authorities from releasing extra water to Haryana.

The rally will be addressed by the Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann; and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal is also expected to address the rally, sources told The Tribune.

According to sources, the BBMB will release extra water from Nangal dam at midnight today as per the share decided by the technical committee of the board last week. The extra water to Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan would be released from Bhakra mainline canal. The depletion period of Bhakra dam — that extends from September 20-May 20 — would end today. The coming months are considered to be its filling period, with water coming from snow and monsoons.

While addressing the dharna, chairman of Guru Ravidas Ayurvedic University, Sanjeev Gautam, credited Bhagwant Mann for saving Punjab’s water share. He said that the BBMB had been abusing Punjab’s water share since long.
