MC launches drive for reuse of compostable waste

To promote sustainable waste management and environmental conservation, the Municipal Corporation of Phagwara has launched a citywide compost sale drive, encouraging the reuse of biodegradable waste through the production and sale of organic compost.

The initiative was formally inaugurated on Monday by Municipal Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta, alongside Mayor Ram Pal Uppal, councillors Praveen Thakur, Gurpreet Kaur, Ravi Kumar and officials from Phagwara MC, including Sewak Ram (Sanitary Inspector) and Pooja (IEC Coordinator).

Prominent local residents and community figures, including Advocate Kashmir Singh Malhi, Dr Iqbal Singh Sohi, Patwari Sohan Singh, and others, also attended the event held at the Urban Estate, underscoring widespread civic support for the campaign.

The compost, made exclusively from wet and organic waste collected through Phagwara’s door-to-door waste collection network, is processed at the Municipal Corporation’s waste management facility. Instead of being dumped into landfills, the organic waste undergoes scientific treatment to convert it into nutrient-rich compost, suitable for agricultural and horticultural use.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor Uppal emphasised the importance of transforming waste into a resource and called on citizens to take an active role in sustainable initiatives. “This programme is a step toward a cleaner, greener Phagwara, where each resident plays a part in reducing landfill waste and improving soil health,” he said.

The MC Commissioner described the drive as a key component of the city’s commitment to the Swachh Bharat Mission and its larger vision of developing into a zero-waste urban centre. “By supporting this compost sale, citizens are not only adopting sustainable practices but also contributing to the broader circular economy,” she noted.

The compost being sold is 100 per cent organic, free from harmful chemicals, and rich in essential nutrients, making it ideal for use in kitchen gardens, public parks, nurseries, farmlands and community plantations. The Municipal Corporation is offering the compost at subsidised rates to ensure accessibility for households, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), schools, NGOs and farmers.

Available at the designated compost yard managed by the Municipal Corporation, the product can also be procured in bulk by institutions by contacting the office of the Assistant MC Commissioner, Phagwara.

Officials highlighted that the sale drive is not only a commercial effort but a public awareness campaign aimed at encouraging eco-friendly lifestyles and reinforcing the “Waste-to-Wealth” principle.
