Polio virus detected in children without symptoms: What does it really mean?

Papua New Guinea reported the presence of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in healthy children from Lae City, Morobe Province, on May 9, 2025. The discovery, stemming from routine checks after an earlier environmental sample, raises concerns due to low vaccination rates in the region, particularly in Morobe Province, where OPV3 coverage was only 44% in 2024.
