Mumbai Rains: 2 Injured As Tree Falls On Them Amid Heavy Rains In Powai; IMD Issues Yellow Alert (VIDEO)

Mumbai: A pre-monsoon rain on Tuesday evening caused chaos across Mumbai, leading to severe waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and injuries. A particularly alarming incident occurred around 8:42 pm in Powai, near Jal Vayu Vihar, Sector C, close to S M Shetty School, where a tree collapsed, injuring two people.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade confirmed that a 40-year-old woman, identified as Shobha Torne, suffered a critical head injury in the incident. She is currently receiving treatment for a deep wound and remains in serious condition. Another individual, 45-year-old Prashant Torne, also sustained injuries and is undergoing medical care.

The sudden downpour resulted in flooding and waterlogging in multiple neighbourhoods, including Andheri, Dahisar, Borivali, Bandra, Kurla, Saki Naka, and Powai. DN Nagar and Chakala during the heavy rains on Tuesday evening. In a significant disruption, the Andheri Subway, which connects the eastern and western parts of the suburb, had to be shut down due to flooding, adding to the traffic woes during peak commuting hours.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued yellow alert

Amid the chaos, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, effective May 24. The alert warns residents of possible heavy rainfall and advises caution, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding.

On May 21, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted cloudy conditions with a chance of heavy rainfall. The overcast skies are expected to provide some relief from harsh sunlight. Temperatures are climbing to around 29°C, with humidity at a moderate 76%. Winds are light, blowing at 3 km/h, and there is a 55% chance of precipitation by 9 AM. According to weather department reports, temperatures are ranging between a low of 27°C and a high of 33°C.

These pre-monsoon showers are seen as a precursor to the upcoming monsoon season, and they have already begun impacting daily life in the city. Commuters faced significant delays and difficulties navigating waterlogged roads, underlining the urgent need for better rain preparedness. Authorities urge citizens to stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions during the alert period.
