Yuva Sena Urges University Of Mumbai To Lift Admission Freeze On 229 Colleges
Members of Aaditya Thackeray-led Yuva Sena on Wednesday submitted representations to the Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil and University of Mumbai (MU) Vice Chancellor Dr. Ravindra Kulkarni, seeking immediate revocation of the admission freeze imposed on 229 affiliated colleges for the academic year 2025–26.
MU had on May 7 announced the suspension of the first-year undergraduate admission process for 229 affiliated colleges for 2025-26, citing non-compliance with mandatory accreditation and governance norms.
The university had said that these colleges had failed to secure or renew accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) or the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), and had not established the mandatory College Development Committee (CDC) as required under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016.
The university had added that a fine of Rs10,000 was also levied on these institutions, further noting that the decision was approved by the Management Council after serious deliberation.
On Wednesday, a delegation that included Yuva Sena management council members Sheetal Sheth Devrukhakar and Milind Satam, Senate member Pradeep Sawant, and former Senate member Rajan Kolambekar met Himmat Chaudhary, Deputy Registrar of the Affiliation Department, MU, and submitted a formal letter of request.
“Many of the colleges have already initiated the NAAC process by paying the required fees. Several of these institutions are located in rural areas, and due to the freeze, poor students from these regions may be deprived of higher education,” stated the letter submitted to both authorities.
“We urge the university administration to withdraw the freeze order immediately in the interest of students,” the Yuva Sena stated.
Additionally, the organisation cited a recent news report and mentioned that their actions were taken at the behest of Shiv Sena leader, Yuva Sena chief, and MLA Aaditya Thackeray. The delegation emphasised that students’ futures should not suffer due to procedural lapses and urged the university to consider withdrawing the decision without delay.
A similar memorandum has also been sent to the state’s Higher and Technical Education Minister.
