Chotta Shimla-Oakover stretch out of bounds for commuters

As work on underground utility duct has commenced, the Shimla administration has decided to close the vehicular movement on Chotta Shimla-Oakover road till June 8. However, emergency vehicles can still ply on this stretch.

The order issued by Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap stated that the decision follows a request from the Executive Engineer, Shimla Division No. III, HPPWD, and is based on recommendations from the police along with input from other stakeholders. Thus, movement of all type of vehicles with the exception of emergency services will be restricted on the stretch during this period, the order mentions.

“To ensure smooth traffic flow, vehicles will be diverted through the alternate route i.e. Oak Over – Rahat Hotel – Chhotta Shimla via the road behind and below Raj Bhawan. Additionally, HRTC taxis operating on the affected route will be redirected through Shilli Chowk via KNH – Himland – Tolland to reach their destinations” said the DC.

The executing agency has been directed to implement all necessary safety and security measures, with particular attention to the safety of pedestrians and school children. Residents and commuters had been advised to plan their travel accordingly and cooperate with the authorities during the construction period.

The work of underground duct is being carried out in Shimla with an aim to improve the aesthetic of the town as well as to ensure 24 hours uninterrupted power supply to the residents even during heavy rainfall and snowfall. The state government is spending around Rs 146.34 crore for this work.

The laying of underground utility duct was initiated by the state government in February this year.
