Ahead of CM’s visit, Mayor orders to spruce up Burlton Park
The sports hub project that had remained a non-starter for years is believed to start soon as the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann may visit this week and inaugurate the much-awaited sports hub project.
For that, Mayor Vaneet Dhir paid a visit to the Burlton Park today along with MC Commissioner Gautam Jain and looked at the preparedness. He ordered to remove C&D waste from the Burlton Park and also noticed that some patch work was to be done. Apart from this, he also asked the officials to ensure proper cleanliness at the site.
Before the Municipal Corporation elections, AAP had released its manifesto for the Jalandhar MC in which the party talked about reforming and restoring the sports infrastructure, besides various other promises.
This has brought the attention towards the sports hub project under the Smart City programme. Ironically, the project worth Rs 77.70 crore that was announced six years ago had not even started then. Under the project, the Burlton Park was supposed to be converted into a huge sports hub.
As per the plan, the Burlton Park will have stadia for cricket, football, badminton, volleyball, table tennis and judo, besides a swimming pool of international standards.
Almost every year, the Deputy Commissioner went to the site and promised that the park would soon be converted into sports hub. Last year too, district administration officials had noticed a garbage dump near the stadium and instructed the MC to clear it immediately. He had also issued directives to maintain cleanliness, manage greenery, remove overgrown bushes, install proper lighting, maintain roads and complete boundary walls within the park.
