Bangladesh bracing for another military coup? Reports of differences between anti-India Yunus and Army chief emerge, conflict is due to…
Yet again, Bangladesh is on the edge. A seismic political shift is likely as the interim government of Muhammad Yunus faces imminent collapse, with the military poised to intervene. According to latest reports, Army Chief General Walker-uz-Zaman believes that national elections should be held in Bangladesh by next December.
Regarding elections, he has said that his stand on this issue remains the same as before. Only an elected government has the right to decide the future direction of the country.
The Army Chief also made some other remarks during the Officers’ Address at the Army premises of Dhaka Cantonment on Wednesday where officers from various levels of the Army posted in Dhaka attended this program.
The Bangladesh Army Chief also talked about the discussions related to the human corridor in Rakhine province of Myanmar.
In response to a question in this regard, he said that any decision regarding the humanitarian corridor in Rakhine province should come from an elected government and should be taken following legitimate process.
In this, national interest has to be given priority. Whatever is done, it should be done while protecting the national interest. Whatever step is taken, it should be done through political consensus.
In March, Muhammad Yunus had dismissed reports about “possible coup”, saying people are being misled through spread of false information.
The same month, President Muhammad Shahbuddin irked Yunus and his government when he asserted during an Independence Day address that Bangladesh and Bangabandhu are inseparable. Bangabandhu is an honorific title for ouster PM Sheikh Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
