Mumbai News: 52-Year-Old Man Dies Of Heart Attack While Swimming In Chembur; Members Demand Urgent Medical Facilities
Mumbai: A 58-year-old man tragically lost his life after suffering a heart attack while swimming at the General Arun Kumar Vaidya Swimming Pool in Chembur on Wednesday morning. The victim, Ajit Anikeni, a resident of Deonar, was a regular at the civic-run facility for over five years.
Eyewitnesses said that Anikeni had completed his first 50-metre lap and was resting at the pool’s edge when he became unresponsive. According to a Hindustan Times report, fellow swimmer Himmat Gori, 53, mentioned that “when the lifeguard spotted that he didn’t come out of the water for five minutes, he rushed towards him."
With no medical facility or stretcher on-site, pool members transported Anikeni to a nearby hospital in an autorickshaw, where he was declared dead on arrival. The incident has sparked outrage among members, who have long demanded improved emergency services at the pool. This is not the first such case, they claim.
The members also mentioned that they wrote a letter to the then-deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in 2023, urging him to provide an ambulance staffed with a doctor on the premises. They also conducted a signature campaign; however, no action has been taken so far, as per report.
