Food Commission carries out surprise checks in Phagwara
To ensure compliance with the provisions of the National Food Security Act and to bring greater transparency in the distribution of wheat through government ration depots, the Punjab State Food Commission has initiated regular surprise inspections across the state.
During an unannounced inspection conducted today in various parts of Phagwara in Kapurthala district, Member of the Commission Vijay Dutt visited government ration depots, including those located in Kirpa Nagar, Omkar Nagar and Navi Abadi Nirangshahpur.
Using a digital meter, Dutt tested the wheat’s moisture content, which was found to be within the prescribed standards. District Food and Supplies Officer (DFSO) Vipin Kumar also accompanied the inspection team.
Dutt stated that the state government is currently running a wheat distribution scheme for the months of April to June. The use of biometric machines and electronic weighing scales at each depot has significantly enhanced the transparency of the distribution process.
However, some electronic weighing scales in Phagwara were found to be malfunctioning. Immediate instructions were issued for their prompt repair to ensure uninterrupted and accurate ration delivery.
Reaffirming the State Food Commission’s commitment to accountability, Dutt announced that such surprise inspections will continue in the future. He warned that strict action will be taken against any individual found negligent in implementing the scheme.
Additionally, Dutt directed that the Punjab State Food Commission’s helpline number, 9876764545, must be clearly displayed at all ration depots. Beneficiaries can use this number to lodge complaints or seek assistance regarding the scheme.
