Hospital property vandalised after Phagwara youth’s death

Chaos erupted at the Phagwara Civil Hospital after the death of a young man, identified as Kapil, led to a violent outburst by agitated family members and supporters. The youth, who had been in a critical condition, died during treatment, prompting allegations of medical negligence from his relatives.

According to sources, Kapil was initially brought to the government hospital in a serious state and subsequently referred to Amritsar Medical College for advanced care. However, on May 19, his family brought him back to the Phagwara Civil Hospital. Despite being informed of his grave condition by the medical staff, his health deteriorated and he succumbed during treatment.

Following his death, tensions flared in the hospital’s emergency ward. Enraged by the incident, a group of people reportedly vandalised hospital property and misbehaved with on-duty medical staff.

Senior Medical Officer Dr Parminder Kaur told this correspondent that she had lodged a complaint with the police immediately to ensure the safety of both staff and patients and to act against miscreants.

The authorities are now investigating the incident, including the medical treatment provided and the outbreak of violence. The police have been deployed to maintain law and order on the hospital premises.

The incident has sparked a fresh debate over the condition of public healthcare facilities and the safety of frontline healthcare workers. SMO Dr Kaur has called for enhanced security to prevent such events in the future.
