UPI Transactions Rules: UPI users will no longer be able to do UPI on these mobile numbers, know why

The government has implemented a new system to prevent digital fraud in which UPI transactions on some mobile numbers may be blocked. Know how to know if your number is affected and what is the solution.

Alert to UPI Users

If you also make payments through UPI apps like Paytm, PhonePe or Google Pay and recently your transactions are failing repeatedly, then this news is very important for you. The Government of India has launched a new system to prevent digital payment fraud, under which UPI transactions are being blocked on some mobile numbers, considering them “risky”.

Why has this decision been taken?

These are the numbers on which either complaints of cyber fraud have been received or whose behavior has been found suspicious such as frequent device changes, providing incorrect KYC, or association with fake QR codes. The purpose of this decision is to prevent fraud before money is deducted from a user’s account. UPI fraud has increased rapidly in India such as fake QR codes, fake UPI handles etc. Therefore, this new system is necessary so that fraud can be stopped before time.

Know what is the new system?

Now under this system, some mobile numbers will be put in Medium, High or Very High category based on “fraud risk”. UPI transactions on such numbers can be stopped or limited.

Which numbers will be affected?

If there are continuous complaints of fraud from a mobile number, or that number is being used repeatedly in a new phone or SIM, then the system can consider such numbers as ‘suspected’. Or UPI transactions can be blocked on numbers against which cyber crime complaints have been filed, wrong KYC details have been given, OTP/UPI PIN has failed repeatedly.

Which apps will be affected?

Big UPI apps like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay and banks are part of this system. More than 90% of UPI transactions in India happen through these platforms, so the impact can be huge.

How to know if your number is blocked or not?

At present there is no public list from which you can directly know whether your number is blocked or not. But if you are seeing the following symptoms, then be alert: UPI is continuously failing, messages like “Transaction under review” or “Could not process” are coming, payment is not happening even after scanning the QR code, then in such a situation contact the helpline of your bank or UPI app.

What to do if your number is blocked?

Logout from the app and login again. After this, update your KYC and bank details. Keep the SIM in the same device in which you have installed the app. If the problem still persists, complain to your bank’s nodal officer or NPCI.
