Lahaul & Spiti’s flood protection project takes shape

Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana announced that flood protection and embankment construction works are currently in progress in the villages of Sagnam, Teling and Todnam in the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti. This crucial initiative aims to safeguard lives and infrastructure in these flood-prone areas of the Spiti valley, which have suffered recurring losses due to flash floods.

MLA Rana highlighted the urgency of these measures, explaining that repeated monsoon destruction had compelled immediate government action. “These villages face annual devastation caused by glacial melt and sudden cloudbursts. Roads get damaged, farmlands wash away and residents live in constant fear during the rainy season. In response, flood protection and embankment construction have begun and are progressing steadily,” she said.

Due to the fragile ecology and high-altitude terrain, the Spiti valley is particularly vulnerable to flooding, making villages like Sagnam, Teling and Todnam frequent victims of natural disasters. Local residents have welcomed the project, hoping it will finally address the long-standing seasonal challenges.

The project includes the construction of strong embankments along riverbanks and streams, reinforcement of existing flood channels and application of advanced soil erosion control techniques. Additionally, the works are expected to improve irrigation and reduce displacement caused by floods. MLA Rana assured the government’s commitment to the sustainable development and disaster resilience of the region, urging local communities to cooperate with implementing agencies to ensure the timely completion of the projects.
