‘If iPhones are made in India, will impose…’: Trump issues warning to Apple, says iPhones meant for US will…
New Delhi: U.S. President Donald Trump has once again threatened Apple regarding the manufacturing of iPhones in India. On Friday, Trump said that the production of iPhones sold in America should be done in America, not in India or any other country. Trump stated that he has previously informed Apple CEO Tim Cook directly that if Apple does not manufacture iPhones in America, the company will face at least a 25% tariff. Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth, “I informed Tim Cook of Apple a long time ago that the iPhones sold in America will be made in America, not in India or anywhere else. If that doesn’t happen, Apple will have to pay a tariff of at least 25%.”
US President Donald Trump does not want Apple’s products to be manufactured in India. Last week, Trump told the company’s CEO Tim Cook that there is no need to set up factories in India.
Trump shared this information during an event with business leaders in Doha, Qatar, on May 15. He mentioned that Apple needs to increase production in the US. Despite this, Apple’s largest contract manufacturer Foxconn has made an investment of $1.49 billion (approximately ₹12,700 crores) in India.
In a recent interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned that 50% of iPhones sold in the American market are being manufactured in India. Cook stated that India will become the country of origin for iPhones sold in the U.S. during the April-June quarter. He also noted that other products like AirPods and Apple Watch are mostly being produced in Vietnam.
From March 2024 to March 2025, Apple manufactured iPhones worth $22 billion (approximately Rs 1.88 lakh crore) in India. This represents a 60% increase compared to last year. During this period, Apple exported iPhones valued at $17.4 billion (approximately Rs 1.49 lakh crore) from India. Currently, one in every five iPhones in the world is being made in India. iPhone manufacturing in India takes place in factories in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
