Parents of 10-month-old Vansh donate organs, body to PGI

Parents of a 10-month-old infant, Vansh, from Lehragaga, Sangrur, have donated their child’s organs and his body as well to the PGI. This remarkable gesture, following the child’s untimely death due to a tragic fall, marks the first known case at the institute where organ donation was followed by body donation.

Vansh was initially treated at Civil Hospital, Sangrur, and Prime Hospital, Patiala, before being referred to the PGI on May 18 after sustaining severe head trauma. Despite best efforts from a dedicated multi-disciplinary team at the institute, the child succumbed to his injuries. Amid this tragedy, his parents Tony Bansal and Premlata made the courageous decision to donate his organs, and subsequently, his body for medical education and research. Fighting back tears, Bansal said, “It’s a loss beyond words. Though we couldn’t save our son, we hoped his brief life would bring hope to others.”

PGI Director Vivek Lal praised the family’s generosity, “Their decision in the face of profound grief represents the very essence of humanity. PGI is privileged to have facilitated this act of immense courage and benevolence.”

Ashish Sharma, head of Renal Transplant Surgery, said, “Paediatric donations are highly demanding due to the delicate nature of infant organs. Yet, through precise coordination, both kidneys were successfully transplanted into an adult recipient, who is now recovering well.”

Jayashree M, professor in the Department of Paediatric Medicine, added, “This remarkable donation was made possible through a coordinated team effort. This act stands as a powerful testament to courage and compassion in the face of grief.”

Premlata recounted the life-altering moment when her son fell from his cot on May 16. “Everything changed in seconds. But we knew our faith called us to help others. We hope Vansh’s spirit brings hope to many.”
