Only 900 speakers of the Sanna language remain. Now Cyprus' Maronites are mounting a comeback
Cypriot Maronite Arabic, or Sanna, a language with roots tracing back to the time of Jesus Christ, is on the brink of extinction with only 900 speakers remaining. Efforts are underway by the Maronite community, the Cypriot government, and the European Union to revive Sanna through schools, alphabet creation, and language classes.
