TN CM Stalin At NITI Aayog Meet Demands ‘Rightful 50% Tax Share For States’ From Centre

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, while addressing the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting on Saturday, called on the central government to increase the state’s share in central taxes to 50%, highlighting the urgent need to support Tamil Nadu’s rapidly expanding urban infrastructure. He emphasised the necessity for a specialized urban transformation mission, akin to Amrut 2.0, tailored for Tamil Nadu — the most urbanized state in India.

In his remarks, Stalin criticised the current fiscal distribution, pointing out that Tamil Nadu receives only 33.16% of its entitled share in central taxes, despite a commitment of 41%. In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister said, “At the NITI Aayog meeting, I demanded a rightful 50 percent share for States in central taxes. We currently receive only 33.16 percent against the promised 41. On the lines of AMRUT 2.0, I stressed the need for a dedicated urban transformation mission, as Tamil Nadu is the most urbanised state in India."

"I also urged a CleanGanga-style project for Cauvery, Vaigai and Thamirabarani, with names in English for national coherence and regional pride," he said.

On CM's visit to the NITI Aayog meet, Deputy CM earlier said, “They (BJP government at the Centre) tried to intimidate us in the past but we refused to yield. Our’s is not a party with a servitude mindset. We will face the cases legally.”

AP CM Proposes Formation Of 3 Sub-Groups

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu proposed the formation of three sub-groups focused on GDP growth, population management, and harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI). Naidu emphasised that these sub-groups, formed in collaboration with the Centre, should accelerate efforts toward achieving the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision of a developed India.

“The first sub-group on GDP growth aims to boost investments, manufacturing, exports and job creation, supported by Central viability gap funding for PPP projects,” said a TDP press release, quoting Naidu, as per a report on PTI.
