Delhi Congress to launch drive against crime, drug abuse among youth
The Delhi Congress will launch a citywide awareness campaign from Sunday to highlight the alarming rise in crimes and substance abuse among the youth in the national capital, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav announced on Saturday.
The campaign will kick off from Anil Rana’s farmhouse on Mangal Bazar Road in Swami Shradhanand Colony, Badli Assembly, and will be held in different blocks of the city on various dates. Congress workers will also submit memorandums at every police station, demanding urgent action against the unchecked availability of drugs and rising youth involvement in crime.
Addressing a press conference, Yadav said the issue had reached a crisis point due to growing unemployment and the easy availability of intoxicants, including drugs and liquor. “Thousands of youth are falling prey to addiction and crime, destroying not just their own lives but also that of their families. This is a result of systemic failure,” he said.
Yadav revealed that he had written to the Delhi Police Commissioner, raising serious concerns over the deteriorating law-and-order situation.
He said despite multiple meetings between Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Government officials and senior police personnel over the last three months, no significant action had been taken to curb the growing menace.
The Delhi Congress chief criticised the “triple engine” BJP government — referring to the BJP’s control over the Centre, the office of the Lieutenant Governor and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi — for its inability to tackle the crisis. “Despite an annual budget of Rs 12,000 crore for the Delhi Police, crime continues to spiral out of control. Data in the public domain clearly shows that Delhi has become the crime capital of the country,” he said.
Yadav emphasised that the Congress party was launching the campaign not for political mileage, but to protect the future of Delhi’s youth and ensure the well-being of society. The initiative was unanimously endorsed at recent district Congress committee and state executive committee meetings held on May 15 and May 20, respectively.
