Delhi-NCR lashed by heavy rain, thunderstorm; Delhi airport flights delayed, traffic disrupted

New Delhi: Heavy rain accompanied by a thunderstorm lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR on Sunday late at night. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued a red alert, warning of severe thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-60 km/h. The downpour also hit several parts of Haryana’s Jhajjar.

Delhi Weather: IMD Issued Red Alert

The IMD alert is a part of the Nowcast warning based on the current weather conditions. The weather department stated that a thunderstorm cell is approaching Delhi-NCR from the west/northwest.

Under its influence, severe thunderstorm or dust-raising wind activity accompanied by frequent lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 40-60 km/h or more) will likely affect parts of the city in the next 1 to 2 hours. The weather department urged residents to take necessary precautions. The IMD has cautioned people to avoid open spaces and not to take shelter under trees. They have also asked citizens to avoid weak walls or unstable structures and stay away from water bodies.

Delhi Weather: Flights Delayed

Meanwhile, the Delhi Airport issued an advisory informing that several flights have been impacted due to adverse weather conditions. “Due to adverse weather conditions last night, some flights have been impacted. Passengers are advised to check their flight status regularly and stay in touch with airline staff for updates,” the advisory read.

Delhi Weather: Dust Storm Likely

Dust storms may also occur in some parts of the city. Authorities have urged people to remain alert and take all necessary precautions to stay safe.

Recently, on Wednesday, a cloud mass entered North Delhi and moved south-southeastwards, triggering a dust storm and strong winds. The winds blew at speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, accompanied by light rainfall earlier in the evening. The heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms also lashed several parts of Haryana’s Karnal.

Several parts of Delhi experienced power cuts on Wednesday after a strong dust storm, followed by thunderstorms, hail, and heavy rain, swept through the city. Areas like Bawana, Narela, Jahangirpuri, Civil Lines, Shakti Nagar, Model Town, Wazirabad, Dhirpur, and Burari were affected. According to Tata Power DDL, electricity had to be temporarily switched off in some places as a safety measure to avoid electrocution. The storm brought down trees and branches, which damaged power lines.
