Rainfall Alert: Heavy rain warning in 16 states, know when monsoon will come in your state
Monsoon 2025 Update: IMD has predicted heavy rains in many places over Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa in the next four-five days. Kerala and coastal Karnataka may receive heavy rains till May 29.
Monsoon 2025 Update: The southwest monsoon reached Kerala on Saturday, eight days ahead of schedule. For the first time in the last 16 years, it has arrived so early. The Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) prediction that this time the monsoon could arrive a week earlier proved to be accurate. All the favorable conditions were ready for the arrival of monsoon in Kerala. In the last two days, it has been raining heavily in many parts of the state.
Heavy rain warning in these states
IMD has predicted heavy rains in many places in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa in the next four-five days. Kerala and coastal Karnataka may receive heavy rainfall till May 29. During this time, strong winds will blow at a speed of 40-50 kmph.
There will be thunderstorms here for the next five days
Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh may also receive sporadic rains and thundershowers in the next five days. A low pressure area remains over the east-central Arabian Sea near the South Konkan coast. This may help the monsoon to move forward. In April, the IMD had predicted above normal rainfall in the 2025 monsoon season. It had ruled out the possibility of El Nino. The activation of El Nino causes less than normal rainfall in the Indian subcontinent.
Know when will the monsoon enter your state
According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon usually reaches Rajasthan on June 25, but this time it can knock on June 20. It can enter Madhya Pradesh on June 15-16. It usually reaches this state on June 18-22. Last year it reached on June 21. Similarly, it reaches Chhattisgarh by June 13, but this time it can reach on June 7-8. However, meteorologists say that there is no direct connection between the date of onset of monsoon and its activation in the whole country. That is, its early arrival in Kerala does not mean that it will cover other parts of the country accordingly. Getting stuck in between can also delay its progress.
Heavy rain possible in MP and Chhattisgarh
According to IMD, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in 15 states in the next few days. These states include Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. Moderate rains with strong winds and lightning are expected in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. A pressure area is developing in the Arabian Sea. This is likely to increase the sea movement.
When early, when late
The last time the monsoon arrived so early was in 2009 and 2001. Both times it arrived on 23 May. It had made the record of arriving the earliest in 1918. Then it reached Kerala on 11 May. The record of delay in monsoon was made in 1972, when it arrived on 18 June. The most delayed arrival in the last 25 years was in 2016, when the monsoon entered Kerala on 9 June. Last year, monsoon had arrived on May 30.
This is the speed of monsoon in the country
Monsoon usually arrives in Kerala on June 1. It covers the entire country by July 8 and starts retreating from North-West India around September 17. It departs completely by October 15.
