Anurag raps Cong govt for neglecting Majra AstroTurf

Once seen as a cradle for future hockey stars, the AstroTurf ground at Majra village in Sirmaur district now lies parched and forgotten, its bright promise dulled by dry dust and political indifference. Hamirpur MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur, during a visit to the facility, criticised the Congress government for its “complete apathy” towards the upkeep of this Rs 7-crore sports infrastructure.

Anurag, who had played a pivotal role in bringing the project to Sirmaur, said that the ground was developed with the vision of preparing the Himachali youth for national and international platforms. “This was more than a turf – it was a dream woven with effort and intent. But, today, children are training without water and without electricity. It’s painful to witness,” he added.

He accused the state government of failing to provide even an electricity connection, which is essential to operate water sprinklers and maintain the AstroTurf’’s condition. “One power connection can change everything but even that has not been provided. This shows sheer disregard for our young sportspersons,” he added.

The MP said that in the absence of water supply, the turf is rapidly deteriorating and players, especially girls, were forced to practise in harsh conditions. “The infrastructure is being ruined and so are the hopes of those training on it. This is not just neglect, it’’s a betrayal,” he added.

Anurag alleged that while the state government could not develop such a infrastructure from its own funds, it was not maintaining a facility created through the efforts of the Central Government. “The Congress government’s attitude is not only disappointing but shameful,” he added.

He asked the state government to ensure proper power and water supply to the Majra ground without further delay. “Himachal’s youth deserve better. Let’s not allow their dreams to dry up with the turf,” he added.
