Israel issues travel warning for Jews, Israelis in Canada, warning of …
Tel Aviv: The National Security Council (NSC) of Israel on Sunday issued a travel warning for Canada, citing an occasional threat to its citizens and Jews in the North American country. Issuing a message to Israeli citizens residing in or visiting Canada, the NSC requested them to take extra precautions, especially in public areas. It also suggested not to display Israeli or Jewish symbols, remaining alert for any kind of threats. The guidelines were issued following a rise in anti-Israel incidents targeting Jewish institutions in Canada over the past 18 months. The anti-Israel incidents included shooting, direct threats to Israelis or Jewish people and Molotov cocktail assaults.
Notably, the council has raised its threat level for Canada from Level 1 (no warning) to Level 2 (occasional threat). The NCS issued an advisory after anti-Israel organisations planned protests in Canadian cities, including Toronto and Waterloo, following pro-Israel events.
“Today (Sunday), anti-Israel organisations in Canada are planning to hold protests and demonstrations … in opposition to rallies in support of Israel,” the Israeli notice says.
“In the past few days, the discourse surrounding these events has become more radical, including what could be understood as calls to violently harm Israelis and Jews at these events.”
The advisory requested attendees of the ‘Walk with Israel’ events to follow police instructions and avoid any friction with the anti-Israel protests.”
On Sunday, Toronto police stated that they had apprehended a man after he allegedly shouted anti-Semitic slurs at attendees during the ‘Walk with Israel’ event in the city.
Officials have raised concerns about the rising intensity of language being used during the protests, including some alarming calls for violence. The National Security Council (NSC) urged Israelis taking part in pro-Israel events to listen to local police, stay alert, and avoid clashing with counter-protesters.
