The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Thane district has reported its first COVID-19 fatality with a woman succumbing to the virus while undergoing treatment at a hospital. With this Maharashtra also becomes the state with highest number of deaths due to Covid while number of cases in the country has reached 1047. Maharashtra has registered a total of five fatalities so far.
Kerala has the highest number of active cases at 430. Maharashtra has 208 cases, Delhi has 104 cases and Gujarat has 83 cases. Out of the 80 cases in Karnataka, only 73 are in Bengaluru.
A total of 11 patients have died in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Nine of these have died within a week.
Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases in several states of India, four new variants have been found in the country. ICMR Director Dr. Rajiv Bahl said that the variants sequenced from South and West India belong to the LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB.1.8.1 series.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 787 new patients have been registered in the last one week. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director Dr. Rajiv Bahl said that so far 4 variants have been found in the country. These include LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB.1.8.1 variants.
Two corona patients died in Jaipur on Monday. One of them was found dead at the railway station. His corona report has come positive. The second death was of a 26-year-old youth admitted in a private hospital. He was already suffering from TB.
On May 17, an 84-year-old man died in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The health department had said that the elderly man died due to multi-organ failure. Two people have died of Covid in Kerala.
New Variant
The World Health Organization (WHO) has also not considered four new variants to be of concern. However, it has been categorized as a variant under surveillance. This variant is being seen in the increasing cases of Covid in other Asian countries including China.
Spike protein mutations such as A435S, V445H, and T478I of NB.1.8.1 spread faster than other variants. They are also not affected by the immunity built against Covid.
The JN.1 variant of Covid is the most common in India. This variant is found in more than half of the samples tested. After this, cases of BA.2 (26 percent) and Omicron sublineage (20 percent) variants are also found.
