Mumbai rains LIVE updates: IMD issues red alert as city breaks 107 year rainfall record, heavy showers expected to intensify in few hours
At least six people lost their lives and several others went missing in rain-related incidents across four Indian states on Monday. Mumbai was hit the hardest, as the city experienced its earliest monsoon in 75 years, arriving more than two weeks ahead of schedule. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon officially reached Mumbai on Monday. Police reported that four people died after being struck by lightning, and another person drowned during the downpour.
The IMD also raised its weather alert from “orange” to “red,” indicating a strong chance of extremely heavy rainfall in the area. Elsewhere in Maharashtra, especially in districts like Thane, Palghar, and Konkan, floodwaters submerged roads, train tracks, bridges, farmland, and homes.
As of early Tuesday morning, May 27, 2025, Mumbai is seeing light rain under cloudy skies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for extremely heavy rainfall until 8:30 AM. The rain is expected to pick up as the day goes on, with chances of heavy downpours at intervals. People are urged to stay alert, especially during high tide, as low-lying areas may experience waterlogging.
