Ache din turned ‘dreadful dream’: Cong on 11 years of Modi-led govt

In its critical assessment of 11 years of the BJP government at the Centre, the Congress called the regime led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “dreadful dream” and “undeclared emergency”.

As PM Modi-led government completed 11 years at the Centre, Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted rising unemployment, unfulfilled job and income promises, challenges faced by marginalised communities, increasing inflation and inequality, setbacks in initiatives like Make in India, strained foreign relations and perceived weakening of democratic institutions as major concerns with the current regime.

He said every section of society had been adversely affected, turning the promise of “achhe din" (good days) into a “dreadful dream".

“The promise of two crore jobs per year for youth has not been fulfilled; nor has the promise of doubling farmers’ income. Women’s safety is in tatters. Weaker sections while the minorities are facing terrible atrocities. If we consider economy, inflation is at its peak, unemployment is on the rise, while consumption is at a standstill. The ‘Make in India’ has flopped, while inequality is at its peak. In their foreign policy, the BJP leaders promised to become ‘Vishwaguru’ but spoiled relations with every country,” he said.

He further alleged the misuse of ED/CBI, blaming the Centre for destroying the autonomy of institutions.

Additionally, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called the day an “undeclared emergency".

“India has won! India is victorious. Good days are coming," PM Modi had said after his party secured victory in 2014.

Modi was sworn in as 14th prime minister on May 26, 2014. Since then, he has remained in power for 11 successive years, securing a third straight mandate in the 2024 general elections, a first for any Indian PM.
