History of Goa

Goa's history is a blend of ancient colonial rule before it integrated with India. In the 3rd century BC, Goa was part of the Maurayan Empire and later, it was ruled by numerous Indian dynasties like the Satavahanas, Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, and Kadambas.

The Portuguese first arrived in India in 1498 when Vasco da Gama landed at Calicut on the Malabar Coast. This marked the beginning of Portuguese colonialism in India and the period of Portuguese rule in India is generally considered to be between 1505 and 1961.

After India gained independence in 1947, it requested the Portuguese to leave Goa territory. However, the Portuguese refused. In 1961, India launched Operation Vijay and annexed Goa and, Daman and Diu with the Indian mainland. Later, on May 30, 1887, Goa was given full statehood, and therefore, Goa became the 25th state of the Republic of India.
