New Delhi: Whenever it comes to travelling abroad, the first choice of people is countries like the UK, UAE, Thailand, Switzerland, etc. But last year, Indian travellers changed this by choosing a completely different country as their travel destination. There has been a huge increase in the number of Indians visiting Japan in the year 2024. The number of tourists visiting Japan and their expenditure have witnessed a tremendous jump.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) Delhi Office, as many as 2,33,000 Indians tourists visited Japan in 2025, contributing about 56.1 billion yen (about Rs 3310 crore) to Japan’s economy. The Japan Tourism Agency said that every Indian tourist spent an average of 2,41,590 yen (about Rs 1.45 lakh) per trip, which is 53.6 percent more than in 2019.

Notably, the average duration of stay in Japan has also increased to 16.3 nights, showcasing people’s interest in knowing the country even more deeply.

Interestingly, tourists from India prefer to travel to Japan alone. Around 86.9 percent of the tourists wanted to explore the country without a guide. As per data, around 65 percent of the people were visiting Japan for the first time, preferring to visit cities like – Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima.

The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) in Delhi is expanding its promotional efforts to include lesser-known Japanese destinations. The goal is to encourage tourists to explore Japan’s diverse regions beyond the major metropolitan areas.

The Year 2025 Also Started Well

Indian tourism to Japan saw a major increase in the first quarter of 2025, with 62,100 visitors between January and March, a 24.8 percent rise compared to the same period in the previous year. February witnessed a tremendous increase of 29 percent, driven by interest in Japan’s winter landscapes, notably Hokkaido’s snow. April also set a new record with 37,300 Indian tourists visiting during the cherry blossom season.

Osaka Expo 2025

The Osaka Expo 2025 is generating significant interest, particularly the Indian pavilion, highlighting India’s cultural, spiritual, and technological advancements. Increased awareness of Japan’s culture and climate among Indians is leading to a rise in interest in Japan as a long-holiday destination, according to the JNTO Delhi Office.
