Over 1.36 lakh cases settled in second Nat’l Lok Adalat across J&K, Ladakh

J&K/LADAKH, May 31: The second National Lok Adalat of 2025 was successfully held today across the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, settling a total of 1,36,488 cases.
A statement said that the event focused on promoting amicable dispute resolution and saw enthusiastic participation across districts.
“Across J&K, 1,82,786 cases were taken up by 173 benches, with 1,36,020 settled, resulting in settlements worth Rs 60.28 crore,” the statement said.
Similarly, in the UT of Ladakh, it said, a total 590 cases were taken up and 468 were disposed off, with settlements of over Rs 2.45 crore.
The Lok Adalat, initially scheduled for May 10 but held today due to deferment, was organized by the J&K Legal Services Authority under the patronage of Chief Justice Arun Palli, Patron-in-Chief, J&K Legal Services Authority, leadership of Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Executive Chairman, J&K Legal Services Authority, and guidance of Justice Vinod Chatterji Koul, Chairperson, High Court Legal Services Committee.
Justice Sanjeev Kumar inaugurated the Lok Adalat at the District Court Complex in Srinagar, and reviewed the proceedings.
Upon his arrival, Justice Sanjeev Kumar was received by Shazia Tabasum, Member Secretary, J&K Legal Services Authority, Tasleem Arief, Principal District & Sessions Judge (Chairperson, DLSA), along with the other judicial officers of the District Judiciary.
To mark the occasion, a ceremonial guard of honour was accorded to the chief guest. During the visit, Justice Kumar interacted with presiding officers, advocates and litigants, and appreciated the arrangements. Several MACT compensation cheques were distributed on the spot.
In Jammu, where second National Lok Adalat held under the chairmanship of YP Bourney, Chairman District Legal Services Authority (Principal District & Sessions Judge, Jammu) and overall supervision of Smriti Sharma, Secretary District Legal Services Authority Jammu, with Justice Sindhu Sharma inaugurating the event at District Court Complex, Janipur, Jammu, 28 benches took up 84,559 cases, settling 81,759 cases involving over Rs 10.46 crore in settlements.
Speaking on the occasion, Justice Sharma emphasized the importance of National Lok Adalat in amicable settlement of long pending disputes. She added that alternative dispute resolution is a vital tool in the justice delivery system which ensures speedy and one-time settlement of disputes.
In Ladakh, Justice Sindhu Sharma, Executive Chairman of Ladakh Legal Services Authority, virtually inaugurated the event at District Court Leh. She appreciated the people of Ladakh for their peaceful nature and preference for amicable dispute resolution. Of the 359 cases taken up across six benches, 315 were resolved with Rs. 85.58 lakh settled.
At District Court Kargil, five benches handled 231 cases, out of which 153 were settled with Rs. 1.6 crore recovered. The proceedings were led by Spalzes Angmo, Wangial Tsering, Chemit Yurgyal, Deldan Angmo, and Sadiq Ali Wazir.
In Udhampur, 11 benches handled 1,822 cases, with 1,483 settled. The total settlement amount reached Rs. 3.06 crore. The proceedings were supervised by Virinder Singh Bhou, Principal District & Sessions Judge, and Dr. Smriti Sharma, Secretary DLSA Udhampur.
The next National Lok Adalat is scheduled for September 13, 2025.
