Ajit Pawar’s NCP Splits Pune Leadership: Sunil Tingre Named East City Chief, Subhash Jagtap For West
The Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction in Pune has appointed two separate city presidents—Sunil Tingre for the East and Subhash Jagtap for the West—effectively dividing the party’s city leadership into two zones.
This comes days after NCP Pune city chief Deepak Mankar has resigned from his post after police booked him and two others for allegedly forging documents to conceal fraudulent financial transactions. He tendered his resignation to the party chief and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Though Mankar has refuted the allegations against him, claiming that some anti-social elements are defaming him out of jealousy over his rise in politics.
Last year, in a tightly fought contest, Maharashtra Assembly Election Results 2024, Sunil Tingre of NCP (AP) was defeated by Bapusaheb Pathare of NCP (SP) in Vadgaon Sheri.
Sunil Tingre was elected as the MLA from Wadgaon Sheri in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, representing the NCP. He secured victory by defeating the then-sitting BJP MLA Jagdish Mulik with a margin of 4,956 votes. Earlier, in the 2014 elections, Tingre had contested the same seat on a Shiv Sena ticket but was narrowly defeated by Mulik, who won by 5,325 votes.
In the backdrop of the upcoming municipal elections, many names were being discussed before the announcement of the new city president by Ajit Pawar's NCP. Initially, the names of MLA Chetan Tupe, former MLA Sunil Tingre, former Mayor Datta Dhankawade, former House Leader Subhash Jagtap, and Working President Pradeep Deshmukh were in the discussion for the vacant city president post. It was said that MLA Chetan Tupe and former MLA Sunil Tingre had decided to distance themselves from the post of city president. Meanwhile, former Mayor Datta Dhankawade and former House Leader Subhash Jagtap were considered strong contenders in the race for the post of city president. However, former MLA Sunil Tingre has been given the responsibility of East Pune city by the NCP, while Subhash Jagtap has been given the responsibility of the western section of the city.
