In the heart of pine forests, Himachal’s first ecotourism project nears reality

Himachal Pradesh’s first ecotourism site is rapidly taking shape amidst the dense pine forests near Hadeta village in Nadaun constituency—an ambitious project inaugurated by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu just three months ago. With the construction of three eco-cottages and four gazebos nearing completion, the site promises to be a unique blend of nature, adventure and wildlife education.

Nestled within a biodiverse forest just 400 metres from Hadeta village, the project offers more than just scenic accommodation. A dedicated wildlife awareness zone and forest trails extending nearly 2 km will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the raw beauty of the region. Though located close to human settlements, the forest teems with wildlife—leopards, peacocks, wild boars, Indian foxes, cottontail rabbits and several snake species are commonly sighted, say locals.

“The movement of leopards is frequent, but villagers still graze their livestock along the forest edges. This forest remains cooler during summers and is part of our daily life,” said Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Hadeta.

Divisional Forest Officer Ankit Singh confirmed that the eco-tourism project spans over two hectares and will be completed within the next three months at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore. “We are preserving the forest’s natural character while enhancing its appeal with exotic and ornamental plants. Plans also include constructing glass bridges over the trails to elevate the visitor experience,” Singh added.

Apart from offering a retreat into nature, the project is also expected to generate local employment. Plans are underway to install kiosks along the road adjoining the site, which serves as the shortest route connecting prominent religious destinations such as Jawalamukhi, Baglamukhi, Chamunda and Baba Balak Nath at Deotsidh.

The Forest Department is hopeful that this project will set a precedent for eco-friendly tourism, balancing conservation with livelihood and tourism development.
