Nagesh Kukunoor's 'The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case' gets digital premiere date

Investigative journalist Anirudhya Mitra's bestselling non-fiction book 'Ninety Days', an account of the investigation of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination, has been adapted for the screen by National Award-winning filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor into a film titled The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case. SonyLIV, which is backing the film with Applause Entertainment and Kukunoor Movies, will premiere the film on July 4. An intriguing trailer has been released by the makers.
In an official statement, actor Amit Sial, who plays lead investigator and Special Investigation Team Chief D.R. Kaarthikeyan, said: “This isn’t just a crime procedural drama; it’s about how invisible hands shape history. The role challenged me to explore the darkest corners of power, grief, and justice. I’m honored to portray a character rooted in truth and resilience.”
Joining Sial in the cast are Sahil Vaid as Amit Verma (SP-CBI), Bhagavathi Perumal as Ragothaman (DSP-CBI), Danish Iqbal as Amod Kanth (DIG-CBI), Girish Sharma as Radhavinod Raju (DIG-CBI), and Vidyut Garg as Capt. Ravindran (NSG Commando). The ensemble cast also features Shafeeq Mustafa, Anjana Balaji, B Sai Dinesh, Shruthy Jayan, and Gouri Menon, among others.
Nagesh Kukunoor co-wrote the script with Rohit Banawalikar and Sriram Rajan. The film will extensively explore the behind-the-scenes process of investigation teams, espionage activities, gruelling procedural aspects, and more.
Kukunoor is known for critically acclaimed films such as Hyderabad Blues, 3 Deewarein, Iqbal and Dor. Also an actor, he was recently seen in the second season of Paatal Lok, alongside Jaideep Ahlawat. The Hyderabad-born filmmaker won two National Film Awards for his work in Iqbal (Best Film on Other Social Issues) and Dhanak (Best Children's Film).
The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case was previously a subject of the Malayalam thriller Mission 90 Days, starring Mammootty, who played a character inspired by filmmaker and ex-Army officer Major Ravi, who based it on his experience as the head of the mission 'Operation One-Eyed Jack', which was set up to capture the assassination mastermind Sivarasan.
