Heavy rain likely in city today, temp to remain below 34°C

After registering a dip yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures in Chandigarh once again rose slightly in the past 24 hours. However, the overcast sky and moderate winds gave some relief from the searing heat in the tricity.

The weathermen have issued the orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorm/lightning at isolated places in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana on Sunday.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature went up by 2.1 notches after dipping by 2.7 degrees on Friday. The minimum temperature also rose by 1.1 degree in the past 24 hours after going down by 0.8 degree on Thursday night.

While Chandigarh and Mohali remained dry, Panchkula received 1.5-mm rainfall during the day.

The weathermen have predicted partly cloudy sky with likely thunderstorms and rain in the tricity region comprising Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula over the next five days.

The maximum temperature will continue to remain below 34° Celsius for the next five days.

The local residents experienced a relatively warm night on Friday night with the minimum temperature going up to 27.8° Celsius.

Faridkot in Punjab and Sirsa in Haryana recorded the highest minimum temperature of 30° Celsius to be the warmest towns in the region on Friday night.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, the department’s observatory at Sector 39 recorded the maximum temperature of 36.3° Celsius while the one at the Indian Air Force (IAF) airport logged 35.8° Celsius on Saturday.

While Sirsa remained the hottest place in the region on Saturday with the maximum of 40.8° Celsius, which was the highest in the region, Bathinda logged the maximum of 38.8° Celsius to stay the hottest town in Punjab today.

“As compared to yesterday, there was a fall of 1 degree and a rise of 2.5 degrees in the average maximum temperature, with the mercury remaining below normal by 1.9 degree and near normal in Punjab and Haryana, respectively, on Saturday,” said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), while confirming light to heavy rain c at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana. It has predicted a gradual fall by 3 to 4 notches in the maximum temperature for the next three days in the region.

It said the temperatures in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula will remain maximum between 31 and 34° Celsius and minimum between 25 and 27° Celsius with possibility of rain coupled with cloudy sky and thunderstorm till June 26.
