Companies Employee: Big News! Now you will have to work 12 hours in the office! Government brings new proposal, know the details

The Karnataka government has proposed changes in the rules related to working hours, which may allow private companies to implement shifts of up to 12 hours including overtime. Employee unions, especially in the IT and ITES sector, have strongly opposed this proposal.

“Dauda-dauda bhaaga-bhaaga sa…” You must remember this song from the movie Chachi420. In the movie, Kamal Haasan is seen doing all the work while running. Just like Kamal Haasan is seen busy in this movie, people working in the private sector are going to be busy now. People working in the IT sector and other companies in Bengaluru city are scared of the latest move of the Karnataka government. Employees have opened a front against the new proposal of the government. The proposal of 12 hours of work issued by the Karnataka government recently has created an uproar in the corporate world.

Now the shift will be of 12 hours

The Karnataka government has proposed changes in the rules related to working hours, which may allow private companies to implement shifts of up to 12 hours including overtime. Employee unions, especially of the IT and ITES sector, have strongly opposed this proposal. The government has made it clear that the maximum limit of working in a week will be 48 hours only. However, the plan to increase daily working hours from 9 to 10 and add overtime has raised concerns about the health and personal life of employees.

What is the proposal?

The Karnataka government plans to implement this change in the entire state by amending the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act. Under which the daily working hours can be increased from 9 to 10. Apart from this, working up to 12 hours a day including overtime can be allowed. Its purpose is to make the rules of the state according to the instructions of the central government, because the Center has asked all the states to consider increasing the limit of working hours. Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) has opened a front against this plan of the Karnataka government. According to the report, if this proposal is passed, the overtime limit will also be increased from 50 hours to 144 hours in every quarter.

IT employee unions expressed opposition

This proposal of the Karnataka government has been strongly opposed by the employee organizations of the IT sector. They say that such long working hours will increase stress among the employees, the quality of work and productivity will decrease and it is against the rights of the employees. Let us tell you that the country’s largest IT hub Bengaluru is located in Karnataka. The Karnataka State IT/ITES Employees Union on Wednesday strongly opposed this decision of the government and said that “the entire working class should come together to oppose the government’s decision to implement a 12-hour daily shift in the IT, ITES and BPO sectors.”

KITU statement

Karnataka State IT Employees Union (KITU) said in a statement that the amendment proposed by the government is an attempt to normalise the 12-hour work day. Currently, under the existing law, any employee can be made to work a maximum of 10 hours a day, including overtime. The union also said that if this amendment is implemented, companies will be able to adopt a two-shift system instead of the current three-shift system. This could put the jobs of one-third of the employees at risk, as more work will be done with fewer employees.
