Maharashtra Congress leader Sachin Sawant has lashed out at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, as he raised questions around the vagueness of the BJP-led government’s stance on farm loan waivers.

In a strong statement, Sawant said that the chief minister must clearly spell out what he considers to be the “right and appropriate time” for announcing a farm loan waiver. “The government must explain the rules and procedures involved in implementing such waivers, so that farmers are not left in the dark,” he added.

Raising questions over the BJP’s election promises, Sawant sought to know why the its manifesto failed to specify this so-called “appropriate time” for loan waivers. “The public deserves an answer. If the right time was known, why wasn’t it mentioned in the manifesto?” he asked.

Alleging a pattern of broken promises, the Congress leader stated, “The BJP has, over the years, shown a consistent tendency to betray public trust. Misleading the people has become their hallmark.”

Attacking Fadnavis he said, “Twisting words and shifting goalposts seems to be his favourite pastime.”

Sawant’s comments come at a time when there is growing pressure on the state government to clarify its position on farmer relief measures as the state is burdened with rural and agricultural distress in Maharashtra.
