Mumbai Rains: Lake Levels Rise To 35%, Consistent Showers Boost Water Stock Across Reservoirs

Mumbai: The cumulative water stock in Mumbai's seven lakes supplying drinking water to the city stood at 35.02 per cent of their total useful content as of 6:00 am on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, according to data released by the Hydraulic Engineer’s Department, BMC (Master Control Centre, Bhandup Complex). This marks a significant rise compared to the 5.29 per cent recorded on the same day last year.

Recent rainfall across catchment areas has helped replenish the lakes, which are crucial for sustaining Mumbai's water needs. The lakes currently hold 5,06,890 million litres (ML) of water, as against the total capacity of 14,47,363 ML. Last year on this date, the lakes had only 76,602 ML of water.

Highest Rise Seen In Middle Vaitarna

Among the seven lakes, Middle Vaitarna showed the highest rise in water level, with an increase of 1.47 meters in the past 24 hours. It now contains 1,93,530 ML, which is 39.09 per cent of its capacity. Modak Sagar also saw a healthy increase of 0.56 meters, reaching 69,978 ML or 54.28 per cent of its total capacity.

Tansa Lake, another key reservoir, recorded a modest rise of 0.25 meters and now holds 56,302 ML (38.81 per cent). Upper Vaitarna rose by 0.09 meters and currently has 91,185 ML (40.16 per cent) in storage.

The combined useful content of the Upper Vaitarna system, which includes Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, and Middle Vaitarna, stood at 2,88,061 ML, making up nearly 41.47 per cent of their combined capacity.

Among the lakes in the Vihar–Tulsi–Bhatsa group, Bhatsa recorded a 0.90 meter rise and now stores 2,04,076 ML (28.46 per cent), while Tulsi recorded a smaller rise of 0.06 meters and now holds 3,216 ML (39.95 per cent). Vihar, however, remains low with 11,588 ML, which is 41.73 per cent of its full capacity.

The Bhandup Complex itself recorded 8.00 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, bringing its total seasonal rainfall to 441.00 mm. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that the water release from Upper Vaitarna was stopped earlier this month on June 9 at 11:00 am. Also, the Middle Vaitarna WSCPO gate remains closed to conserve water.

More Rainfall Predicted In Coming Days

Mumbai is expected to receive more rain for the upcoming days. According to IMD, the Mumbai and Konkan region is predicted to receive heavy rains with cloudy skies today. A yellow alert was issued for the city by the weather department.
