Instagram adds keyframe editing & audio tools to Edits app

Instagram has rolled out a new set of updates for its standalone video editing app, Edits, continuing its steady pace of feature development since the app’s launch in April.
The latest updates introduce more advanced editing functions, including the addition of Keyframes, which allows users to mark and modify specific points in their video timeline. This new feature enables more granular control over video presentation and is aimed at improving the precision of edits. Keyframe support for text, stickers, overlays, and cutouts is also expected to be added soon, according to the company.
In addition, Instagram has updated the 'Ideas' tab within Edits, which now supports saved audio and allows users to leave sticky notes on selected audio clips for later reference.
The update also includes voice enhancement tools, including the ability to reduce or remove background noise from voiceovers, an increasingly common feature among mobile video editing platforms. Further, new text effects have been introduced, expanding the range of creative options available for annotating clips.
These updates follow a series of earlier additions, including editing improvements, expanded transitions, font options, a teleprompter function, beat-marking features, and an AI-powered “Restyling” tool, which can reframe video clips in different styles and visual contexts. The Restyling tool is part of a broader set of AI features currently in development.
Instagram’s Edits app enters a competitive market currently led by TikTok’s sister platform CapCut, developed by ByteDance. However, with the latest feature additions, Edits is increasingly positioned as a direct rival, offering comparable, if not more advanced, tools for short-form video creation.
While the app is currently free, Instagram has indicated that certain features may eventually be placed behind a paywall. No timeline has been provided for when monetisation might begin.
