Google launches experimental AI app ‘Doppl’ for virtual outfit try-ons

Google has launched a new experimental app called Doppl, which uses artificial intelligence to let users visualise how different outfits might look on their own bodies. The app, announced on Thursday, is now available for iOS and Android users in the United States.

Doppl enables users to create a digital version of themselves by uploading a full-body photograph. Once the virtual model is generated, users can upload images or screenshots of clothing items, from thrift store finds to social media posts, virtually try them on. The app also offers the ability to turn these static images into AI-generated videos to provide a more lifelike representation of how the clothes might appear in motion.

The app includes features that allow users to save and revisit their favourite looks, as well as share their virtual outfits with others.

According to Google, Doppl builds on the virtual try-on functionality previously integrated into Google Shopping, which allowed users to preview clothing on a range of body types. Doppl represents a shift by bringing this technology into a stand-alone app, offering a more personalised and interactive experience. The company also indicated that the app could support future development by providing insights into user engagement with virtual try-on technology.

Doppl is being launched under the Google Labs umbrella, and the company noted that the app is still in an experimental phase. In a blog post, Google stated that results may not always be precise, and there may be inaccuracies in how clothing fits or appears.
