Flooded roads, power cuts: Rain brings back Mohali’s civic woes
A fresh spell of rainfall threw life out of gear in the city with power cuts, erratic water supply and waterlogging woes being common occurrences.
Many parts of city saw power outages spanning from late on Friday night Saturday evening. Phase-10, Phase-11, Phase-2 and Sector 69 residents complained that there was no power supply after 11pm. Waterlogged roads also wore a deserted look as streetlights remained off at night.
Anil Sharma, a resident of Phase 10, said, “Even before the rain, the power supply was erratic. There was a two-hour cut in the evening.”
Meanwhile, roads in Phase 2, Phase-4, Phase-5, Phase-6, Phase-3B2, and Sectors 70 and 71 were left inundated with rainwater. Two-wheeler riders and even those commuting in cars had a tough time wading their way through the water.
A car, meanwhile, was damaged in Phase 10 after a tree fell on it around 8 am in the morning.
The owner, Amarjit Singh, said his new car was extensively damaged in the incident, adding, “Fortunately, no one was injured. Morning walkers and a group of residents who do yoga in the park had just left the area. We have informed the Municipal Corporation about the leaning trees in the area but no pruning has been done. There are still seven to eight trees that are leaning dangerously,” he said.
Phase-11 and Phase-2 residents also complained of not receiving any water supply in the morning as pump boosters malfunctioned due to erratic electricity.
Dug-up road causes traffic chaos in Zirakpur
The situation was no better in Zirakpur and Dera Bassi, with the main markets remaining waterlogged throughout most of the day. Residents, meanwhile, slammed Zirakpur civic body officials for digging up the main drain near the Patiala Chowk in the middle of the monsoon season.
“Every year, just before the arrival of monsoons, MC digs up the drain, compounding traffic problems in the area. Two-wheeler riders and road users are at a great risk as waterlogged roads and uprooted drains pose risk to residents here,” said Col (retd) Kamaljit Singh, a Pabhat resident.
Civic body officials, meanwhile, said the digging work has been done to lay the drainage pipe as water stagnates in the area.
