Guiding Light: Do You Know About The Unique Comb Of Knowledge?
Have you noticed what keeps happening in the mind every moment? The mind constantly wonders what is going to happen next. Knowledge is being aware of this phenomenon of the mind, of what is happening right now within it. All other information and education can be acquired by reading books. You can read a book on any subject, whether it is birth, death, or dietary habits. There are dime-a-dozen books, but awareness of our own mind cannot be learnt from a book.
What does the mind do? It vacillates between the past and the future. Every moment, it is either angry about the past or anxious about the future. And there is another tendency of the mind, which is that it clings to the negative. Even if ten positive things happen and one negative, we hold on to that one negative and forget all the ten positives.
To bring about a shift in these two tendencies of the mind is the greatest help you can offer yourself. Just becoming aware of these patterns makes you very natural, very simple. These are such precious values, and they allow you to blossom from within. We are all born with this innocence, but as we grow more intelligent and more mature, we begin to lose it. We become stiff. Drop the stiffness, and then see how much more joyful, more rewarding, and more interesting life becomes. This is knowledge. And this, too, is worship.
As a child, you had no real problems. You fought one day and made up the next. But as you grow, you get tangled and entangled in opinions, judgements, and emotions. The whole society gets entangled. That’s when you need the comb of knowledge. Just like a good comb helps keep your hair tangle-free and orderly, knowledge brings clarity to life. Without it, we get entangled with one another; our minds fill with hatred, aversions, and cravings. Just look into anyone’s mind—there is some feverishness about someone, a craving for something in the future, or an aversion rooted in the past. But with the comb of wisdom and knowledge, we can restore order in society.
If everyone in society could live in the present moment, if we were able to accept people as they are, there would be no problems, no conflict. For that, we need knowledge. We need awareness. It is essential.
