Mackenzie Davis, Josh Hartnett join Netflix's Newfoundland-based series

Blade Runner 2049 actress Mackenzie Davis is the newest addition to the cast list of Netflix’s new limited series project set in Newfoundland. The actress, who made her debut in Smashed, and popular for her roles in Terminator: Dark Fate and Black Mirror, is to star opposite Josh Hartnett, who will also serve as the show’s executive producer.

Created by Jesse McKeown, the six-episode series follows the challenges of a fisherman (Hartnett), as he fights to protect his family, his community and his means of living, when a mysterious sea creature wreaks havoc on a remote Newfoundland town.

“Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama,” said Netflix Canada content directors Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury in a statement. “We can’t wait to transport our members to coastal Newfoundland with this timely story about community, resilience and adaptability.”

Jesse McKeown will also serve as the series’ showrunner and executive producer alongside Jessica Rhoades of Pacesetter UK. Other executive producers include Chris Hatcher, Hartnett, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall. The series’ writing team includes Karen Walton, Perry Chafe and Natty Zavitz, while Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn will direct.

Davis was earlier seen as Louise Dalton, in the Blumhouse/Universal psychological thriller Speak No Evil, opposite James McAvoy, and as Isabel in Swimming Home. She will next be seen in Netflix’s crime-noir series The Undertow.

On the other hand, Josh Hartnett, known for his roles in Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor and the Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer, will be reportedly starring in the Colleen Hoover adaptation, Verity, opposite Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway. He was last seen in Fight or Flight.

While the release date is yet to be revealed, production will soon be underway. The series will be filmed and set within Newfoundland, Canada.
