On Cam: Cop Seen Assaulting Temple Guard In Sivaganga; CBI To Probe Custodial Death Case

A disturbing video has surfaced in the Sivaganga custodial death case, showing 27-year-old B. Ajith Kumar being allegedly beaten by plainclothes police officers.  The visuals, now viral on social media, have reignited concerns over custodial violence in Tamil Nadu and prompted the state government to hand over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Sivaganga 'Custodial Death' Case

Ajith Kumar, a temporary temple security guard from Tiruppuvanam, was picked up last week by a “special team” of the local police in connection with a theft case. He later died under suspicious circumstances. The mobile footage shows Ajith being struck with a lathi by men believed to be police officers.

Chief Minister MK Stalin, under fire from opposition parties and civil society, spoke to the bereaved family over the phone and assured strict action. He later shared the video of his condolence call on his official 'X' handle, saying, "I am very sorry, have asked action to be taken, serious action. Stay strong."

CBI To Probe Case

In response to the growing demands for justice, the government arrested five policemen on murder charges, suspended a DSP, and placed the Sivaganga district police chief on compulsory wait. On Tuesday, the case was officially handed over to the CBI.

Earlier, Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami accused the government of failing to rein in police excesses and demanded an impartial CBI probe.
