Will BJP Finally Get A Woman President? Report Says Party Is Ready To Walk The Talk On Women Empowerment
As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) moves towards a leadership vacuum following the end of JP Nadda’s extended term, the party is reportedly considering a historic move—appointing a woman as its next national president, according to an India Today report.
Nadda’s official term concluded in January 2023, but he was retained to steer the party through the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With that mandate now complete, senior BJP leaders have been holding intense discussions to finalise a successor, with prominent women leaders emerging as frontrunners for the top post.
Nirmala Sitharaman Tops List
Among the leading contenders is Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who recently met with BJP President JP Nadda and party General Secretary BL Santhosh at the party headquarters in New Delhi. Her name has gained considerable traction within the party, with insiders citing her extensive ministerial experience and organisational depth, the report stated.
If chosen, Sitharaman would not only become the BJP’s first woman president but also help the party strengthen its presence in southern India. Her elevation would signal the BJP’s commitment to the proposed 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha—expected to come into effect after the next delimitation exercise.
A seasoned leader within the BJP, Sitharaman has previously served as Defence Minister and remains one of the party’s most high-profile faces in the Union Cabinet.
D Purandeswari: Another name in serious consideration is D Purandeswari, the BJP’s former Andhra Pradesh state president. Known for her multilingual proficiency and cross-party political experience, she brings a unique blend of regional appeal and national visibility.
Purandeswari was also part of “Operation Sindoor,” a multi-party international delegation, underscoring her diplomatic credibility and leadership standing within the party.
Vanathi Srinivasan: A lawyer-turned-politician from Tamil Nadu, Srinivasan is also reportedly in the fray. Currently serving as the MLA from Coimbatore South, she has been with the BJP since 1993 and has steadily risen through the ranks. Her past roles include State Secretary, General Secretary, and Vice President of the party’s Tamil Nadu unit.
In 2020, she was appointed National President of the BJP Mahila Morcha, and in 2022, she made history as the first Tamil woman to join the BJP’s Central Election Committee.
