Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a broadside against the NDA government in Bihar over the murder of a businessman, alleging that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his ally, the BJP, have turned the state into the crime capital of India.

Prominent Bihar-based businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead outside his residence in Patna by a bike-borne assailant on Saturday, sending shock waves across the city.

The incident stirred up a political storm in the poll-bound state with opposition parties targeting the NDA government over the law and order situation.

In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi said crime has become the ‘new normal’ in Bihar and the government has turned utterly “ineffective”.

"The brazen murder of businessman Gopal Khemka in Patna has once again proven - the BJP and Nitish Kumar together have turned Bihar into ‘India's crime capital’. Today, Bihar lives in the shadow of loot, gunfire, and murder,” he said.

Urging the people of Bihar not to tolerate this ‘injustice’ anymore, the former Congress president said a government which cannot ensure the safety of their children,  cannot be entrusted with their future either.

"Every murder, every loot, every bullet - is a cry for change. Now is the time for a new Bihar - where there is no fear, only progress. This time, the vote is not just to change the government, but to save Bihar," he wrote.

Meanwhile, the government has constituted a special investigation team to probe the murder of Khemka who was gunned down near the gate of his house in Gandhi Maidan locality.
