Thousands brave heavy rain to celebrate Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday
Despite heavy rain on Sunday morning, thousands of Tibetan devotees and international guests gathered in the main courtyard of Tsuglagkhang — the main Buddhist temple in McLeodganj — to celebrate the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama, one of the world’s most revered spiritual leaders.
Among those who sent their greetings were global leaders, including Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, former US Presidents Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending our warmest wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday. He has been an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement read during the event, praised the Dalai Lama for embodying unity, peace and compassion. “The United States remains firmly committed to promoting respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Tibetans, including their ability to freely choose and venerate religious leaders without interference,” Rubio stated.
Veteran Hollywood actor and Tibet supporter Richard Gere, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Rajiv Ranjan Singh and other dignitaries were present at the grand celebration.
The colourful event featured performances by schoolchildren, international artistes and representatives of Tibetan Buddhist sects. It began with a soulful song dedicated to the Dalai Lama by Switzerland-based singer Jamyang Choeden, followed by a dance by artistes from Mongolia and Albania. Sitting before a towering nine-tier cake, the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, thanked the gathering with a deeply spiritual message. “It is the love of the people that inspires me to keep serving all sentient beings,” he said.
“Instead of seeking admiration through selfish goals, I practise Bodhichitta, holding others dearer than myself, which brings people together and fills me with joy,” he said.
